Advancing Excellence in Canadian HR
The Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA) held its second annual National Human Resources Forum: Advancing Excellence in Canadian HR in Ottawa on June 6 and 7, 2006.
The event brought together a diverse mix of senior human resources
practitioners from across Canada to continue to chart a course for the
HR profession.
Keynote Presentation: Michael Adams on Canadian Social Values and HR
The invitation-only event was anchored by keynote speaker
Michael Adams, one of Canada’s leading market researchers. Since
co-founding Environics in 1970, he has guided the firm’s growth to one
of Canada’s largest and most sophisticated research houses. Mr. Adams’
has studied the impact of social trends on public policy and corporate
strategy. At the Forum, Adams gave an overview of social values and the
story of social change in Canada – and set out broad implications of
the values as they relate to HR.
Café Conversations: Facilitated by Dr. Carol Beatty, Queen’s University

Dr. Carol Beatty, Director of the Industrial Relations Centre,
Queen’s University and Associate Professor, Queen’s School of Business,
facilitated discussion and break-out groups relating to the Keynote
Presentation. Attendees explored the impact and future implications of
social values and trends on HR, our workplaces, corporate strategy and
public policy.

Michael Adams is the President of the Environics group of research and
communications consulting companies with offices in Montreal, Toronto,
Ottawa, Calgary, Stamford, Conn., Washington, D.C and Oakland,
California.
Mr. Adams is the author of three Canadian best sellers: Sex in the Snow: Canadian Social Values at the End of the Millennium (Penguin, 1997), Better Happy Than Rich? Canadians, Money and the Meaning of Life, (Penguin 2000) and Fire and Ice: The United States, Canada and the Myth of Converging Values, published in May 2003, also by Penguin. Fire and Ice won the prestigious 2003/04 Donner Prize for the best book on Canadian public policy. In the fall of 2005, Fire and Ice was selected by the Literary Review of Canada as one of the 100 most important books ever published in Canada.
In an article published in the September 2004 issue of The Walrus
magazine Michael Adams predicted the re-election of George W. Bush
based on his reading of the evolution of social values in the United
States. Subsequently, his fourth book American Backlash: The Untold Story of Social Change in the United States also by Penguin was released in the fall of 2005.
He is currently working on two book projects with working titles: The Future of Leadership and Boys and Girls, the later about changing gender identity in the western world.
Michael Adams holds an Honours B.A. in Political Science from Queen's
University (1969) and a M.A. in Sociology from the University of
Toronto (1970).
Recently, Michael Adams was named as one of the 100 most influential people in Canadian communications according to Marketing Magazine’s Power List 2005.

Carol
Beatty was the Director of the Industrial Relations Centre at Queen's
University in Kingston, Ontario from 1996 to 2000. She is currently an
Associate Professor with Queen's School of Business. Since joining
Queen's University, she has taught in undergraduate and graduate
programs in the Schools of Business, Industrial Relations and Policy
Studies.
Dr. Beatty is also active as a consultant, and has facilitated change
efforts in a number of private and public sector organizations. She has
spoken to numerous groups in Canada and abroad, including provincial
and federal governments, private industry, human resources associations
and universities in both Canada and international venues. She has
helped facilitate change efforts and team-based structures at numerous
organizations, including Alberta Newsprint Company, Accys, Bombardier
Inc., the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation and the
Canadian Nurses Association. Dr. Beatty is a trained facilitator in
Future Search (Weisbord and Janoff) and Whole System Change
(Dannemiller Tyson).
Her recent books include the Building Smart Teams (2004 with B. Barker); Employee Ownership: the New Source of Competitive Advantage (2001); and Facilitator Guide: Building High Performance Teams (1998 with B. Barker).
In addition, Dr. Beatty has authored four complex multimedia business simulations used in high-level human resources education: Transitions, Panorama at the Crossroads, Change-O-Meter, and Harmon Health.
She serves on the selection committee for the prestigious Manning
Awards for Canadian innovators and on the Human Resources Advisory
Board of the Department of National Defence.
Dr. Beatty holds a PhD, MBA and BA from the University of Western
