The 2008 CCHRA National Forum was a great success, bringing together
more than 70 HR professionals, HR association leaders and specialists
on immigration issues to discuss this year’s theme – Integrating New
Canadians into Canada and the Workplace: Maximizing Potential.
The two-day Forum featured a keynote address by Phil Wilson,
Corel Corporation’s Vice President of Global Human Resources about his
personal experience as an immigrant to Canada and his professional
expertise gained during his career in leading innovative global human
resource initiatives for Corel, CIBC and other multi-national
organizations.

Forum welcome reception at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on March

Day two began with original research presentations:
- Global Talent Sourcing in the United States and Canada – Mary
MacDonald, representing the Society for Human Resource Management
(SHRM) who conducted the study with the CCHRA.
- Leadership in a Diverse World – Results from the Hay Group’s
research into leadership qualities among business leaders from various
countries.
- Attracting, retaining and engaging a vastly diverse workforce –
using data from Hewitt’s Best Employers in Canada study, this
presentation focused on the HR and leadership practices needed to
engage a diverse workforce.
- Verifying Credentials – From their experience screening millions of
Canadians, Backcheck provided insight into the particular challenges
but added necessity of carefully conducting pre-employment background
checks in a global economy.
Following the research presentations, four key
representatives from business, government and the immigration and
multiculturalism sector participated in a moderated panel to provide
insight from their own experiences. Finally, National Forum attendees
were invited to break out into groups where they were each asked to
discuss key issues presented during the forum and propose ideas to help
businesses, HR professionals and government move forward on these
matters.
